The Keep

BergfriedBergfried2
For the safety of the old trade route "Old Bohemian Path", leading from Halle to Prague and passing the river here in Zschopau, a fortification was built on the top of the mountain above the river. This very path was used as route for the establishment of further settlements in the upper area in the middle of the Ore Mountains during the 12th and 13th century. Up until today, the relicts of this old street have been preserved as deep caves.

The ownership of the fortification changed for several times, until it finally became property of the Wettin dynasty in 1456.  Today, the only still existing part of the original building is the keep "Fat Henry" (German: Dicker Heinrich)  being situated in the middle of the castle grounds.

Dimensions:

  • 31 meters high
  • 11 meters in diameter
  • 4,20 meters thick walls at the ground level
  • 1 meter thick walls in the upper part

Thus, it is a typical example of still existing medieval keeps. Climb the 144 steps inside the tower, learn from the numerous information boards and showcases about the keeps history. Finally, enjoy the fantastic outlook from the top of the keep.
